Today, Culture Club is a year old. Wow, already?!?! On May 5, 2014, we took a leap of faith, threw all of our chips in and turned what most would consider a pipe dream into our reality. As I sit here and reflect, I'm filled with a range of emotions stirring inside of me: Bewilderment and a little shock as to where the last year has gone; Joy and elation as I look back on where we began and where we stand today; Utter wonderment, hope, and excitement for the future that is ahead of us. This last year has had its share of high highs, extreme lows, and some mediocrity in the middle, but it's the "bumps in the road" that truly make it an adventure, right?
FANTASY VS. REALITY
Amber and I went into this venture with a wide eyed, fantastical idea of what living out our dream was going to be and then were hit with the shocking reality of what being a small business owner truly is. I still remember the first day we launched our online store. We prayed and cried tears of joy before hitting that publish button. Immediately after, we discussed planning our next buying trip in the month to follow, so super confident that everything would be sold out by the week's end. Reality check #1. The sound of crickets. No one bought anything our first week. We sent out mass texts to all of our loved ones and flooded our Instagram and Facebook with posts luring everyone else to our newly developed website on that very first day and the days to follow, and still, no one came. We were crushed and doubt began to rain on our newfound little parade. It would have been so easy to throw ourselves a pity party and commiserate (I won't lie, we actually did that first weekend), but we picked ourselves up, dusted ourselves off, and brainstormed "out of the box" ways that we could get our business off of the ground. Sales finally came and at that moment, we realized that patience and ingenuity go hand in hand with hard work when you are creating something that you are passionate about. This was the first in many "bleeps on our radar" over the last year. The difference between then and now is our perspective. We look at things through different eyes. We try to not sweat the small stuff (Amber's better at it than I am). We know that #thestruggleisreal, but it's a struggle that is worth fighting for, so we continue to forge ahead. The great payoff.
ONE OF OUR GREATEST REWARDS
Though our passion is for all things fashion and beauty, the one true love of our lives is Jesus Christ. It was important that we live as a reflection of Him, even in our business. We wanted to get involved and give back to the community, and it was here that our partnership with Kapiolani Hospital was born. We've had the honor and privilege to participate in their Canteen program, as well as their Masquerade themed Prom. Nothing is more rewarding then seeing the happiness and joy on the faces of these teens who are living in the face of adversity. It's a true testament of grace and thankfulness. Everything is pale in comparison. This is one of our greatest rewards to date, and we look forward to growing Culture Club in a way that will continue to make a major impact.
Jeremiah 29:11 says "For I know the plans I have for you" declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future". Things haven't always worked out the way that we initially anticipated, and we've had moments where we have questioned whether our passion and perseverance was enough. It all came down to this, our faith in God. I now realize that the struggles, shortcomings, and frustrations we've faced in this last year was God's way of preparing us for His greater plan and purpose. It isn't a coincidence that we started a business centered around our great love for fashion and beauty. Nor is it a coincidence that I'm in business with one of my extremely talented best friends. We've learned a lot about ourselves, each other, our business, and our goals for the future of Culture Club. Doors are opening, opportunities are presenting themselves, and our business is beginning to gain momentum. In retrospect, each obstacle has provided an even greater reward. What's next for Culture Club, you ask? Oh, just a fun little vehicle of our very own. Stay tuned. We're about to take you on a tremendous ride.
With each individual featured in my STYLE PROFILE series, I gain a greater appreciation of one's personal style and fashion loves. Each person's perspective on fashion & beauty is so different and unique, but the commonality I always see is that there fashion aesthetic directly correlates to their lifestyle, whatever that may be. It's a fact that most overlook and don't consciously take into consideration. Fashion is viewed as being trivial and contrite by many, but it's always been the one constant love in my life. Well, aside from Jesus Christ and my loved ones. Still, I know that I don't stand alone in my opinion and my latest STYLE PROFILE (like the others) is living proof of that.
This week, I introduce you to Tiffany Thurston Liftee-Kau, a Touring Musician & Recording Artist in Christian Music and the founder of the BLOOM CONFERENCE here in Hawaii. Tiff's thriving career in the Music Industry and Christian Community has taken her from Hawaii to New York to Nashville and finally back home to Hawaii. She describes herself as "an island girl that's lived in the Big City to the Country and travelled everywhere in between". So completely on point. Her travels have most definitely influenced her personal style and there is a direct reflection in her wardrobe. I had the great pleasure of sitting and talking fashion, beauty, life, and God with her. What I thought would be a quick hour "meet up" ended up being almost 4 hours of goodness. So much great content that as I sit here putting my blog post together, I'm having a difficult time narrowing it down. Ha! So, here's just a "taste" of what was discussed. The best of the best.
Describe your personal style in three words?
OUT OF DESPERATION!!! (LOL in a BIG way to this response). I want to wear what makes me feel good and hide what I want to conceal and out of it, an outfit is born. Flatter & comfort. I'm a "shoe in" for that.
What's your preference: Vintage, Street Style, Designer, or Homemade DIY?
DIY Homemade that looks Designer.
(Side note: Once upon a time, Tiff majored in Fashion Design & Merchandising at UH Manoa, so skill is on her side in this category.)
What are some of your current fashion obsessions?
Hipster Hats, My Black Quicksilver Men's Watch, & My hair pulled back in a tight bun with volume on the top (especially after I've given it the "Aloha" Salt Water Treatment, which consists of a dip in the ocean and letting my hair air dry). I've also been obsessed with painting my nails with different line designs. I call it"hori, vert, vert".
What designers and/or celebrities most inspire you?
The Kardashians. Haha. I have a hard time admitting that, but it's true. Coco Chanel is another one. I love the simplicity of the minimalist look. Jeffrey Campbell for shoes. Oh, and Kelly Osbourne for the Fashion Police.
Where do you find inspiration?
Europe. Their style is classic, old, & timeless, yet ahead of its time, if that makes sense. In a nutshell, fashion forward and timeless.
Describe your Spring/Summer outfit & then one you'd put together for Fall/Winter:
Spring/Summer: Dark Denim Shorts with a thick, brown Surfer-style Belt paired with a fitted Cami and a Short Sleeved Kimono with tassels and topped off with a cute Necklace, Sunglasses, and Sandals.
Fall/Winter: I actually prefer Fall/Winter fashion because I feel like there are more options and variety and I can wear all the things that I love: boots, jackets, hats, and scarves. I'd wear awesome Boots, sleek Tights, a long Cami, my favorite black Leather Jacket, and I'd add a pop of color with a scarf. (Her eyes literally light up as she gives me THIS description.)
What are your essential beauty "must haves"?
(She came out with an arsenal of stuff! Lol. I absolutely love it!)
Clarisonic, Josie Maran Spf 40 Sunscreen, Moroccan Oil Strong Hold Hairspray, a Teasing Brush/Comb, Laura Mercier Lipgloss, Paula Dorf Transformer, Shiseido Eyelash Glue from Japan, Marc Jacobs Eyeliner, Dior Show Mascara, Urban Decay Glitter Eyeliner in Spandex (a mix of blue, purple, & silver flecks), & Laura Mercier Body Bronzer.
Since you travel often, what items do you always take with you?
Oribe Dry Texturing Spray (it's a must), my leather bag from Greece, my Phone Charger, a Fashion Scarf, & an Oversized Cardigan.
Who do you like shop with, where are your favorite places to shop, & what are your shopping habits?
By myself! (A common answer I'm finding from most girls). I love Nordstrom Rack & TJ Maxx. Designer goods at a great price. I also like Mary Z's in Kailua. I spend the most on shoes, but I wait and choose when to invest and try not to duplicate.
(For those of you who really know me, you know the latter is definitely something I have not mastered. I rarely wait and if I love something and it's offered in more than one color, I buy them all. Hi. My name is Tatum, and I'm a shopaholic.)
Since you are a musician, I have to ask, does the music you listen to influence your style?
Absolutely! Hawaiian & local music= a beach day. Paramore's "Ain't it Fun?"= Color + Doing my Hair + a Fashion Forward look. Acoustic, like Mumford & Sons or Worship Music= Flowy Bohemian. Rap= Street Style.
What style tips have you learned over the years that are part of your normal routine?
Any other words of fashion wisdom?
It's about feeling good in your own skin, knowing your body, and finding pieces that highlight your attributes & your personality, and then building an outfit out of that.
Great words that we should all live by.
Long Black Cami from Blush Boutique in Nashville
Tunic Length Black Tank Top from Fighting Eel Kailua
Veda Black Leather & Chiffon Moto Inspired Jacket from Moda Boutique in Nashville
Party Tie Dye Leggings from Mary Z's in Kailua
Tan Suede Knee High Boots from Miss Meers in Eugene, Oregon
One of a Kind Necklace by J. Roeman from Calypso in Eugene, Oregon
Studded Hoop Earrings from Bebe
Black Quicksilver Men's Watch from her dad
Black & Gold Studded Wrap Leather Bracelet
White Stone Ring from Old Navy
Wedding Ring that her husband, Keoki, got from Skeie's Jewelers in Eugene, Oregon (her brother in law, Ricky's family business)
Tan Leather Duffle Bag from Rhodes, Greece
I love a girl who arrives at a STYLE PROFILE with an outfit that is FULLY accessorized!!!
Vivacious is the first word that comes to mind when I think of Tiff. She's just one of those people that lights up the room with her infectious smile, sweet charm, and gentle nature. She continues to inspire and encourage young Christian women with the BLOOM CONFERENCE, a Hawaii based event she founded 2 years ago that is targeted to girls ages 12-22 . Her passion for fashion can also be seen in an accompanying product line of tees that she herself has designed and created for BLOOM. The response has been so great that she's actually had a hard time keeping product stocked. Though her love for boots, jackets, hats, and scarves still prevails, she's revamped her wardrobe to include clothes that have fashionable cuts, but are also made out of breathable textiles, a necessity due to our tropical climate. Inevitably, there's been a shift back and forth in her fashion aesthetic for work on the road and here in the islands, but the balance has truly proven to be the best of both worlds.---Tatum
BLOOM CONFERENCE is scheduled for June 26 & 27, 2015. For more information and/or register go to: www.ilovebloom.com. Check it out. You won't want to miss it!!!
As many of you may or may not know, my life has gone through a remarkable change in the last year and a half. And my hair has definitely been a reflection of this transformation/metamorphosis. It went from being long and blonde with blunt cut bangs to being long and purple (way before Nicole Richie made it famous, may I add) with those same blunt cut bangs. Super fun and fairly normal, but at this point, my life was beginning to go through a major shift and as I evolved, so did my hair style. My philosophy has always been, "Go Big or Go Home", and my attitude towards fashion & beauty has been right in line with that. I showed up to my hair appointment last September and told my stylist, Dayna Okuma Mau, "cut it all off". Surprise!!! Needless to say, we compromised on an asymmetrical bob. Baby steps (more for her than for me. Sorry Dayna.). Six weeks later and after the initial shock had dissipated, we cut it ALL off. Absolute freedom!!!! It's as if I was finally letting go of the past and looking forward to the future. Since then, we've had so much fun with color and cutting it shorter and shorter and shorter (presently it's a silver grey mohawk that is sadly growing out. Stay tuned for September! Sorry again Dayna). It's been fun for the two of us to use my head as "a canvas for creativity", but I've since learned to alert her about my ever changing and drastic wants & hair needs BEFORE my appointment (not everyone loves extremes as much as I do). Each time, though, she graciously obliges and each time I walk out of the salon feeling refreshed, renewed, and in awe of her amazing talent and skill. Dayna is definitely a master of her trade and a fellow fashionista. So, in honor of all of her greatness, I bring you the STYLE PROFILE of the incomparable DAYNA OKUMA MAU.
Dayna's Look: Black Zara Tunic, Black Leggings, Black & Gold Feather Belt (Zara), Gold Marc Jacobs Watch, Marc Jacobs Bangle, Kate Spade Bracelet, Jennifer Zeunner LOVE Necklace, 14th & Union Black Strappy Wedges
What best describes your personal style?
Urban & Edgy with a little girly flair
I could probably answer this myself, but what's your preference: Vintage, Street Style, Designer, or Homemade?
Street Style, most def. (Just as I thought.)
So does the music you listen to influence your fashion aesthetic?
Yes!!! I will forever love Eve & Tupac, and you'll see hints of urban, street style in what I wear.
(Love that she answered yes to this. Up until this point, it was straight up nos from everyone.)
Current Style Icons?
Nicole Richie, Laura Govan, Jennifer Meyer
I love (& envy) that you are always for traveling for work and for play. What can I always find in your suitcase?
My 3 Barrel Waver (makes sense she's a stylist), Gold Embellished Scarf, Mint YSL Clutch, and my Gold Watch (like myself, her faithful oldie.)
LA or NY fashion?
OMG, NY!!! I love that there is a good mix of street and high fashion there.
(Side note: She'll be traveling to the "Big Apple" in September to style the current Miss Hawaii for the Miss America Pageant. A job that she has been doing for the past 6 years. Yes, people, she's THAT good!!!)
What should every girl have in her wardrobe?
A bright cardigan & gold hoops.
Favorite fashion & beauty brands?
Redken for beauty (she's a Certified Redken Educator. Again, she's super awesome!), Vince for apparel, & Jennifer Zeunner for accessories
I know you love to shop just as much as I do. Who's your favorite shopping partner & where do like to shop?
Shaina Nakahara (her B.F.F & no hestitation to the answer there)!!!! We love Zara, Nordstrom, H&M, Barney's, & J. Crew.
And finally, what are the five items in your closet that you simply could not live without?
My Chunky Wedges, Oversized Tunics, Leggings, Liquid Liner, & my Gold Marc Jacobs Watch.
I love Dayna for the person she is inside and out and the beauty that she creates around her. She's an awesome stylist and it would be wrong of me to not share her with the rest of the world. Contact her @ #(808) 306-8727 /email@example.com.---Tatum
Flirty, Fun, & Versatile are the 3 words that my latest STYLE PROFILE, Janina, uses to best describe her fashion aesthetic and I couldn't have picked the words better myself. Her wardrobe reflects her personality and her lifestyle. It's not only an art form, but a necessity. Between school, shuttling her 3 very active boys around, and her own varying extracurricular activities (sewing, piano lessons & CROSSFIT to name a few), this mama seems to always look so well put together. In fact she came to our "meet up" with layering, accessory, and shoe options. A woman after my own heart and one who shows some real versatility, of course.
Janina is a true lover of DESIGNER fashions and contemporary lines like Alice + Olivia, Elizabeth and James, Joie, & Australia's Cameo. The minimalist look, clean lines, classic cuts, and luxurious textiles make her heart skip a few beats and visibly puts her in a kind of trance as she explains her fashion loves to me. It's probably also why her shopping mantra is "Splurge then hibernate" , and why she credits her online purchases to "extreme coupon codes galore". Hey, a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do to get the goods.
Janina's Day Look: Lovers & Friends Printed Babydoll Dress, Kensie Lace Bandeau, Denim Vest, Love AJ Necklace, Yashi Cross Spiral Ring, Gorjana Wrap Bracelet, AE Wrap and Friendship Bracelets, Marc By Marc Jacobs Watch, Bewells by Jeffrey Campbell, Bar III Anorak Jacket, Chinese Laundry Camo Flats
What is your current fashion trend obsession?
Open back, cut out detailing on tops and dresses. It allows me to show some skin without looking like I'm trying too hard.
What are the 5 most worn items in your closet?
My push-up bra!! I have three kids!!! (We both burst into laughter with this answer. She also claims it's the one item in her wardrobe that she couldn't live without and one that EVERY woman should own. True story.) My "go-tos" are my Leopard Bandeau, Distressed Cut Offs, My Old Navy Cardigan, Chinese Laundry Camo Flats, & Havaianas.
What should every girl have in their wardrobe, besides a push up bra?
One daring piece. My piece is a pair of strappy stilettos. Hot!!
She (like many of my other girlfriends featured) has a shoe collection that I would love to raid. She recently purchased a new pair of Joie Sandals for $100 off the ticket price at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. Score!!
What do you take with you on vacation?
Lipbalm and Sunglasses, always. I bring to vacation what I can't often wear in Hawaii. Over the Knee Boots, More Make-up, More Accessories, More Headgear, More Everything!!!
Janina's Night on the Town Look: Boulee Off the Shoulder Top, StyleStalker Skort, Joie Sandals, Wishing Bridge Necklace, Wishing Bar Ring, Yashi Spiral Ring, Stacking Rings from Fighting Eel
It came as no surprise to me that one of her favorite style icons is blogger Julie Sarinara aka "Sincerely Jules". Her style is very similar. Like "Sincerely Jules", she can seamlessly transition from boho to rock glam to sporty with ease "throwing in a subtle edge with every look". The proof is in the pudding, as you can see from her day to night looks.
Three pieces of fashion advice that she would offer up if asked?
All amazing & all Janina.---Tatum
We all know that I could talk about fashion from the time I wake up to the time my head hits the pillow and then dream about it while I sleep. It's an added bonus when I'm surrounded by fashionable friends who share my great love. So, when our friend, Anhee, rolled into town last weekend for the CJ FUENTES WEDDING looking like a million bucks, I didn't hesitate to ask her to be the feature for my next STYLE PROFILE.
Her weekend wedding style was definitely not a disappointment and neither were her answers to my long list of fashion & beauty related questions. I felt as if I was looking in the mirror as we talked about our likes & dislikes (mostly likes). There was the same spark of excitement and pure joy for words like "designer", "jeans", "vintage", and "tote". So simple, yet awesome in every possible way. Here's a "look see" glimpse of what we discussed:
Describe your style in 3 words.
Sophisticated, Boho, & Chic .
Pick your poison: vintage, street style, designer, or DIY homemade?
I like to mix it up. A little designer, a little street style, a little vintage. My style goes from Target to Chanel, baby.
What are the 5 items in your closet that you wear the most & that you couldn't live without?
My Alice + Olivia Pumps, my favorite pair of Joes Jeans, my Club Monaco Slacks (work staple), my Karen Millen Trenchcoat, & my Chanel Purse.
ANHEE'S REHEARSAL DINNER LOOK: BCBG Generation Black Column Maxi Dress with Side Slit, Forever 21 Black Knee-High Studded Gladiator Sandals
Any favorite movie costumes?
Yes!!! My favorites have to be GREAT GATSBY, MARIE ANTOINETTE, & ALMOST FAMOUS.
(Side note: Thank God she answered this question. She was the first, and I was beginning to think that I was the only movie nerd who actually paid attention to the costuming.)
Favorite fashion era?
The 20's! I love the beading, the opulence, and the head gear & head pieces.
ANHEE'S WEDDING LOOK: Coral Chiffon Pleated BCBG Dress with Flutter Sleeves, Strappy Blush Embellished Aldo Sandals
Who do you like to shop with & what are your favorite spots?
Generally by myself, with my mom, or with a good, close friend. It's serious business! ANTHROPOLOGIE, MADEWELL, & CLUB MONACO are my favorite stores and NASTY GAL when I shop on-line.
Any amazing fashion deals?
I've scored some of my best deals at Target with a lot of their designer collaboration lines.
What are some of your current fashion obsessions?
Denim jeans are always a staple in my wardrobe, but I've been wearing a lot of crop tops, oxfords, & jumpsuits lately. I'm kind of on board with the overall trend, too.
I love that Anhee's looks for the wedding weekend were effortless, ethereal, & unaffected. She kept her pairings simple with minimal accessories, but still made a huge statement at each event. Her style is a true reflection of her fashion philosophy: 1) Don't be too matchy, matchy. 2) Less is more. & 3) If it's not fun, it's not worth it. It's not that serious. A fashionista in every sense of the word, this statuesque stunner is as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside, and it's why we all love Anhee.---Tatum
Today's STYLE PROFILE features my girlfriend, Kelia, a wife and working mother of three. Due to the family's hectic schedule, her daily attire is usually casual and consists of rompers and simple black & white tees that can be mixed and matched with high waisted shorts, jeans, and leggings. Kelia favors rings, simple necklaces, and stud earrings to accessorize her outfits and tends to keep her makeup to a minimum. Besides her family, her two true loves are LOUIS VUITTON and SHOES, to which she has a large collection of both. She is the proud owner of a number of bags and clutches created by the famous designer, and her shoe collection is "drool" worthy, as well. Made up of varying styles of sandals, stilettos, and boots (by the likes of Jeffrey Campbell and YSL to name a few), I scanned her closet wishing that my feet would miraculously grow to a "sharing" size. In the infamous words of one of our favorite style icons, Rachel Zoe, "I die".
If there is anyone I look to for finding the best on-line deals, it's Kelia. With a family of her own now, shopping on the worldwide web has not only allowed her to get her "fashion fix", it's also given her the opportunity to seek out substantial discounts on desirable goods. We both are lovers of Nasty Gal, Swell, and Urban Outfitters, and we get equally excited when we "swap" stories of the items that we have newly acquired. She's definitely one of my favorite style mavens and my shopping soul sister.
Kelia's Look: One Teaspoon Cali Romper in Chambray (Swell), Jeffrey Campbell Everly Booties (Nasty Gal), Sabine Necklace (Piperlime)
Callie's Look: GAP Kids Crayon Tee, GAP Kids Light wash Denim Vest, GAP Kids Chambray Skirt, accessorized with a Coral Pink Headband and Minnetonka Moccasins
In celebration of family and motherhood, I thought it would be fun to shoot Kelia with her daughter, Callie, who also has a wardrobe that would make other little girls green with envy. Callie was a natural in front of the camera, so I just kept clicking as she continued to pose on her "turf", the playground. Super fun morning with a family I love.---Tatum
This past weekend, Amber & I were a part of the Cat & Justin Fuentes Wedding. We had the opportunity to stand beside them as bridesmaids, witness them taking their vows as husband and wife, and celebrate the union of these two special friends. A truly beautiful experience.
I'm a lover of blogs and bloggers, plain & simple. I mean, I don't know what I did with insomnia filled nights before BLOGLOVIN. A BEAUTIFUL MESS, is my all time favorite DIY blog, so when I saw their post about QUOTEABLE T-SHIRTS a few weeks ago, I instantly knew it was something I wanted to create for the bridal party. Amber & I selected quotes befitting of each bridesmaid and then I went to work on putting it all together for Friday's Rehearsal Dinner. They were fun to make, super cute & personalized, and a great keepsake.
The celebration was in full swing the entire weekend. A good time had by all. Check out some of my favorite captured moments.
The bonus this weekend was being able to spend two FULL days of quality time with my besties, a rare commodity since we're now a combination of mothers, professionals, and business owners. Gone are the days of throwing caution to the wind and living for the day. We had the chance to have long overdue heartfelt talks, make each other laugh until we had side pain, danced like there was no tomorrow, but most of all, we got to just BE together. It reminded me of what life is truly about. It's not about working constantly, making tons of money, and just trying to get through the day. Those things are all fine and well, but it's truly about valuing and appreciating your loved ones, being thankful for all that you have in life, and stopping to enjoy the present because tomorrow is not a guarantee. Awesome snapshots of our lives. This weekend definitely goes down in the books as one of my most memorable.---Tatum
After perusing through the recently released, HONOLULU STREET STYLE (don't walk, run to your nearest Barnes & Noble to get a copy---highly recommended), I was completely inspired by the creativity, style, & grace of the individuals featured. Each and everyone of them had a diverse outlook and expression of fashion. As I flipped through the pages examining the beautifully shot pictures and reading the accompanying text, I became giddy with excitement and my heart was filled with an elation that only those with my same fashion obsession could describe. My mind began to wonder (as it often does) to those near & dear to my heart. Because I am such a lover of all things fashion, it's only natural that I would gravitate to those who share this same passion (not a prerequisite, but most definitely an added bonus). Why not feature those who continue to inspire me and keep me on my "fashion game"? No matter where their lives may take them, these are the people that I look to to "bring it" on the daily. I bring you my first installment of: STYLE PROFILE.
Meet Hazel, one of my stylish girlfriends. She was the first one brave enough to let me photograph her and answer a slew of questions about fashion, style, & beauty.
You look fabulous today! Give us an overview of what you're wearing.
I like to mix it up & I never know where my day might take me, so I actually have shorts under this skirt & another pair of heels. Lol. I figured you'd wanna see how I do my quick outfit changes.
1st LOOK: Black & White Striped Forever 21 Top (with a Peter Pan Collar), Black Vince Camuto Midi A Line Skirt, Red Zara Pumps, Black Belt with Silver Stud Detailing, Gold Mens' Nixon Watch, Skinny Gold Bangles, Vintage Rings, & a Vintage Gold Bracelet.
Describe your style in 3 words.
Chic, Sophisticated, & Classic.
Do you prefer vintage, street style, designer, or DIY?
Vintage, for sure. I look to the 40's & 50's for fashion inspiration. I'm big on the "ladylike" look. Audrey Hepburn is one of my style icons, and Chanel is my all time fave.
What designers and/or celebrities most inspire you & influence your personal style?
I'm kind of obsessed with bloggers right now. I love Aimee Song from "Song of Style" and Wendy Nguyen from "Wendy's Lookbook". I also love Rachel Bilson and Olivia Palermo.
What is your current fashion obsession?
I'm a sucker for shoes! They seem to be my biggest fashion obsession from season to season. These Red Zara Pumps are my favorites right now. I love the color, pointy toe, & the lacing detail at the ankle. I like that they make a statement.
Who & where do you usually shop?
By myself!!! Haha. I like to take my time and most of my girlfriends think I take too long. I do a lot of on-line shopping, but I love Nordstrom, Zara, & Henri Bendel.
Any recent fashion deals?
I actually just got a pair of $300 Brian Atwood Sandals for $27. Major score!!!
What is the one item in your wardrobe that you absolutely couldn't live without?
I actually have three. Sunglasses, Shorts, & my eyebrow pencil.
LA or NY fashion?
NY hands down! I love the look of high fashion there. Long Coats, Boots (of all styles), & Sweaters!!! So different from Hawaii.
What 3 pieces of style & beauty advice would you give someone?
2nd LOOK: Hazel shows the versatility of her outfit by changing out of her A line Midi Skirt & Red Pumps and into Red Paper Crown Scallop Edge Shorts & Black Dolce Vita Ankle Strap Sandals.
Though I never wanted to admit it growing up, I am a little bit of a nerd. A nerd with good fashion sense, that is. When I was young, there was nothing I loved more then taking that drive to the old Aiea Library with my mom and my older brother to pick out a good book. I couldn't wait to get home, curl up with my newly selected read, and go on an exciting adventure. It was one of the biggest highlights of my summer vacation.
Reading is still one of my favorite past times. I'm always equipped with a book digitally downloaded on my iPad for those days when I just want to spend the day in bed and relax, or simply a device I use to pass the time on a flight to LA. Knowledge is power and books are my secret weapon. I am fascinated by people and the stories that weave the tapestry of their lives. With the inception of our new business, I have immersed myself into a number of books written by strong and enterprising business women. So, it was only natural that the first installment of my SUMMER READS posts be dedicated to #GIRLBOSS by Nasty Gal's bad ass CEO and one of my personal style icons, Sophia Amoruso.
#GIRLBOSS chronicles her journey to becoming the CEO of a multimillion dollar business that is now viewed as one of the fastest growing online retailers to date. Filled with anecdotes and advice, this book is written in a style that is light hearted and just so relatable that you feel like you're listening to one of your coolest girlfriends. This easy read is perfect for a lazy afternoon at the beach, lovers of fashion, or those who simply need a little inspiration.
On a recent trip to LA, Amber and I were fortunate enough to attend a book launch q & a featuring Nicole Richie and the GIRLBOSS herself. Talk about inspirational! Needless to say, even though I already had my digital copy in tow, an autographed hardcover was a must have. It sits proudly on my bookshelf. So, in the infamous words of #GIRLBOSS, "Don't ever grow up. Don't become a bore. Don't ever let the Man get to you. Okay? Cool. Let's do this". Definite food for thought and a highly recommended summer read.
